Getting Unstuck Using Any Five Things

So the behavior change folks tell us it's easy! Change is easy if you give it the right conditions. And the right conditions aren't so hard to cultivate, you only need to change any five things in your life to unglue stuckness; that's the word from the work of Robert Kegan, researcher and expert in the world of adult learning.

Changes seem to propel development if they involve a number of different development areas including both internal and external shifts. For example, beginning a consciousness practice is an internal process. Going for daily walks is an external process. It would be more likely to create developmental movement to simultaneously take up new internal and external practices in a selection of developmental areas, called lines. Music, cooking, physical fitness, story telling, travel, languages, haunting used clothing stores, represent different kinds of growth lines. So now think of a list of five changes, new areas of growth, you could make.

Do you need examples? Ok, so I'll suggest someone could:
1. Pledge to ride their bicycle to work every day (external)
2. Change the nature of their daily consciousness practice (internal).
3. Begin writing every day (both internal and external, hmmm.)
4. Join a new organization (external and involves others, another good thing to do).
5. Learn how to use social media (some of both).

The practice element is what's important to the getting unstuck. You've got to apply the changes every day for a while for transformation to occur. Some say this can happen in a matter of weeks. Having change stick takes longer, likely months for many things.

And, it's important to have one's basic needs accounted for before attempting change. That means sleeping 8+ hours a day, eating well (a topic for another day!), and getting daily exercise. So spend some time today making a list for yourself. Things you'd like to change.

Go ahead shake it loose, baby!
